Westerway
River, rail and the shadow of Mt Field
Overview
Westerway is a small settlement in the Derwent Valley, around 70 kilometres north-west of Hobart on the Gordon River Road. It sits at the junction where travellers turn toward Mount Field National Park, and the old railway line and the Tyenna River both run through the valley here.
Properties tend to be rural — cottages on generous blocks, small farms and lifestyle acreage — with hop country, berry farms and native bush on all sides.
Lifestyle
This is a quiet, seasonal part of Tasmania. The Westerway Raspberry Farm is a long-running local stop in summer, the Tyenna River is well regarded for brown trout fly fishing, and Mount Field National Park is roughly 15 minutes further on. New Norfolk, with supermarkets, schools and medical services, is about 25 minutes east.
