Berriedale
Working riverside on Hobart's northern edge
Overview
Berriedale sits on the western shore of the Derwent about 12 kilometres north of central Hobart, between Claremont and Glenorchy. It is best known as the home of MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, which opened in 2011 on the Moorilla estate at Berriedale peninsula and reshaped the way visitors think about this stretch of the river.
The housing stock is a mix of mid-century brick and weatherboard homes, newer infill and a working industrial edge along the Main Road corridor. Waterfront and elevated streets look across the Derwent to the eastern shore, and prices remain well below the inner-city suburbs for comparable outlook.
Lifestyle
Day to day life here is practical and river-facing. The Intercity Cycleway runs the length of the suburb, connecting Berriedale to Hobart's CBD on a largely flat, traffic-free path. MONA's grounds, restaurants and the Moorilla winery are open to the public, and the museum's ferry runs from Brooke Street Pier in the city.
Shopping and services are a short drive at Glenorchy's Northgate centre or Claremont Village. The Brooker Highway puts the CBD roughly 15 to 20 minutes away outside peak.
